The special delivery took place around 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 5, in Hampden County when Trooper Jose Cabrera, assigned to the Springfield Barracks, stopped a vehicle for traveling over 100 miles per hour on Route 91 southbound in West Springfield, said the Massachusetts State Police.
When he approached the car, the driver explained his girlfriend was in labor and that her water had broken.
Cabrera immediately requested an ambulance through the Springfield Barracks desk officer and assisted in keeping the soon-to-be mother calm.
But soon, Cabrera was informed that all nearby ambulances were actively responding to other calls, so with a little quick thinking, he made the decision to escort the woman to the hospital in the back of his cruiser with the father following.
He safely delivered the mother-to-be to Mercy Hospital and a short time later she delivered a healthy baby boy.
